    Book and Merch Collecting

    By: Natalie Burton

I am a big reader. I participate in Goodreads yearly challenges, I have my own bookstagram account on Instagram, I buy a lot of book merch, and go to my favorite authors book tours when I can. At times, I feel like my library is too full and I need to complete a destash, but anytime I try, I can’t do it. I have boughten multiple copies of the same book because of a cover change, reversable dust jackets with artwork, stenciled or sprayed edges, or mainly because an author signed a specific book. When is enough, enough?

I started slowly buying book merch in 2016. Mostly candles with scents based off certain characters, places, or novels. No big deal. However, my candle collection grew larger and larger every month. Then scrolling on Instagram, I discovered book boxes. These boxes are so popular now, but before, there weren’t many around. These boxes included a theme and had different items that were inspired by books that match the theme. The big part of the box, is that it included a new book, usually signed by the author, or included a signed bookplate, and the cover was different from the actual cover. This was my personal rabbit hole. Today, selling these types of books can be sold for high dollars, depending how popular it is. I have been getting different boxes for multiple years, but lately I have had to cut back because it is getting expensive.

There are a lot of other book merch you can purchase as well. I follow a fabric headband company and a clothing company for example, who deal specifically with bookish items. They are so comfortable, and I find myself wearing them all the time, outside of work. One reason I keep purchasing from these types of companies is because I am supporting small local businesses. I honestly love these companies; they are very active on their social media and speak to their customers and even ask for suggestions as to what books to focus on next.

So, when is enough, enough? For me, the answer is probably never. I love this hobby and it allows me to find new businesses to try and support. It can hurt your wallet, so proceed with caution. Who says there is such a thing as too many copies of one book? As long as you’re happy, go for it!

If you are interested in bookish merch, here are some companies on Instagram I recommend (These companies focus on young adult books and series):
